I plucked and picked
picked and plucked
broken gravels and mended ligaments
ashen corpse and worm-curry
masked failures and never occurring success
salty tears on sugar-coated worry
watch everyone grow and wither
boomerang play and tear
houses haunted and empty
crippled ant finally on top of molehill
and I live on the same path
afraid of dancing monkeys
and my dream choking on mis-happenings
but
I stand tall
picking mangoes from my graveyard
knowing I had a staggered start.
_
(because I refuse to give up)

Short Message:
Hey Guys! I read somewhere that writing comes to you in waves. And if you catch it by it’s tail before it crosses you , you create something wonderful. My problem is no waves are directed my way. So I am facing a huge writer’s block. I need your help. Sprinkle me with some tips beautiful ppl.
Lots of Love, Shikha

I believe in “the rotation of the crops”. When I want a rest from poetry, I paint. When I want a rest from painting, I dance. Allowing a field to lie fallow for a while allows that field to replenish itself. Lovely poem – I have shared it the Grey Suit: Poem Stream – on FB.

I know the problem. But often, when I don’t write, it’s because I am no longer content with the way I was writing. It’s sometimes better to read and learn new things, and then come back, and try again. See, I won’t go into detail, but it’s clear to me your writing has changed. That’s how it works Shikha!

Has it changed for the better or for the worse ? I have noticed that writing is always transient. I never stick with one way. My writing is how I am. I am trying to find myself, similarly I am moving zig-zag, lost in search of my style with words.

It’s a thoughtful poem about creativity, more stylized than what I was used to, but still as rich in imagery. So yes, you improved.

Thanks! I will need to improve more though. I am far far away from where I want to be.

Sometimes you just knock it out of the park; this is one of those times. Keeping it short really adds the exclamation point. This feels like it could be read in one big breath. It also seems to be written to be read aloud. Well done, indeed. So glad you’re back; work like this gives me a good jolt early in my day. Thanks.

To respond to your request about tips, I’m telling you the key is to read A LOT! Read published poetry if you like poetry or fiction if you like fiction. You cannot ever read enough. Recognizing the techniques of craft are key, and then once you get an idea or topic or premise, you’ll know what to do with it and execute it into something than you even expected in the first place. 🙂 ❤ I like your poem here, btw. 🙂

Read. Read. And then read some.
Duly noted.

When I feel I am unable to write, I journal. Sometimes an idea will come out of it sometimes not. A friend suggested jotting down random words letting them pop up into your mind. I also jot down any lines that meander through my brain for use later.
Your poem is lovely. I hope that these ideas might help. 🙂

Thanks Jay! I do this. And since carrying a pen and ppr is not possible, I jot the points in my phone and then use them later.

Lovely stuff, I wouldn’t have thought it was written during a block. Do you listen to music while you write? I find listening to something that fits the tone/vibe I’m going for often helps me.

Well, this poem certainly isn’t a block – very well done. I use my dreams for inspiration – record them first thing in the morning and never run out of material. Just a thought.

Oh! Thank you V.J.
My dreams can become my inspiration. But I forget them as soon as I wake up 😁

Haha – before you move in the morning, just think: “What was I dreaming? Feeling? Where was I?” make a note. In time it gets easier. Even a fragment is a start.

I do notice that when we wake up our emotions are all over the surface. It’s like if you blink, you miss it. Though great advice. I will definitely work on it.

I’ve been working with my dreams for over 32 years – they are a great source – not just for inspiration. Let me know how it goes. And yes, as soon as you move and shift into awake state they can disappear. It takes practice

I usually will read good poetry where one or two words will spark something. Sometimes reading a good journalistic feature piece will make me think of my own ideas on the subject. You an also come join us over at dVerse, where there are prompts and online community three times a week.

Aww, this is what I do when I need inspiration: listen to either new or old music that makes you dance or “happy”, look at old photos, google images that appeal to you like beaches & palm trees, think of an old flame or childhood memories. Something will stir up and a heartfelt load should come forth.

This is indeed a good idea. Do something that triggers your emotions.
